FAQs
How much is the departure tax?
28 USD per person.
What happens when I arrive?
A Coast to Coast Adventures representative will meet you at the Juan Santamaria International Airport, or Liberia International if pre-arranged. The driver will have a Coast to Coast Adventures board with our logo. You will receive a Trip Information Pack including; the agreed itinerary with specified pick up times, contact details for local guides and our 24 hour emergency number, vouchers for hotels and local tour operators, a map outlining the route of your trip and some other documents that will be useful for you during your stay in Costa Rica.
What clothes should I bring?
We have an outline What to Bring list on our website. Casual clothes are very acceptable in Costa Rica. It is generally not necessary to dress for restaurants. There are however some expensive restaurants in San Jose where customers dress a little less casually so check when making a reservation.
What should I do about tipping?
Tipping in restaurants, bars and for taxis is generally not common in Costa Rica. Guides and drivers would naturally welcome a tip in appreciation of a job well done. The amount is left at your discretion and obviously this will depend upon the level of service received.
Are the Guides qualified?
All Coast to Coast Adventures’ guides have First AID, CPR and Swiftwater Rescue and Head Guides have Wilderness First Responder.
Do I need to pay an extra fee on the Adventurer program if I travel by myself?
Single supplement charge is payable for a guaranteed single occupancy and is only payable if you do not wish to share a twin room.
How difficult is the mountain biking on the Coast to Coast Trip?
The majority of our clients are not avid mountain bikers. The first couple of days are not that difficult and there is time to get used to the bike and get some tips from our guide, who is always willing to give instructions. Biking is usually an area that we expect to give more instructions to participants and for some sections if participants are not comfortable biking they can walk. We appreciate that there are all levels of ability when biking and the main aim is to see the country at a leisurely pace. A good level of fitness helps. We have had clients of all ages and abilities on this trip.
Do you make arrangements for airfares?
We do not organise flights as our services start once you arrive in Costa Rica. For clients travelling from the US, please ask us and we can recommend a travel company who can help with flights at attractive prices, but there is no obligation to use them.
Where can I buy my travel insurance?
It is difficult for us to recommend an insurance company as our clients come from all over the world and we do not have any links with insurance companies. If you are rafting, be sure your policy covers you.
What do Class II, III & IV rapids mean on the rafting trips?
Class 2: Some rough water, maybe some rocks, small drops, might require manoeuvring.
Class 3: Whitewater, medium waves, maybe a 3–5 ft drop, but not much considerable danger. May require significant manoeuvring.
Class 4: Whitewater, large waves, long rapids, rocks, maybe a considerable drop, sharp manoeuvres may be needed.
What is the best time of year to travel?
Any time is a good time to see Costa Rica! Even though Costa Rica is in the northern hemisphere, the names of the seasons are reversed and "summer" starts late in November. This is not because of a large temperature difference but because it tends to be drier from December through April. Outside of these months there is more rain but the mornings are usually hot and sunny. The rain is often welcomed during activities. It can be very dramatic and it is warm rain! For Corporates and Groups timing often depends on budget and for students it is usually Easter, June, July and August.
I have a ton of questions relating to my particular group can I talk to someone?
Absolutely. Our staff speak English and have all the experience and advice waiting to give you. Send us an e mail: office@coasttocoastadventures.com or call us on (506) 2280 8054.
